1) We are a secret group….
2) We are a group of ELITE former Vanoc Employees who meet once a month to try a new restaurant within the lower mainland.
3) Our goal is to reach 99 restaurants visited together.
4) How do you join? You must have worked for VANOC and worked for EVS. Sorry those are the rules 😉

JK – we always allow guest appearances, and special guests to wine and dine with us!! Just be prepared for craziness 🙂

I have been part of this group since November 2010, and we never review or write about any of these experiences. Why?? Probably because we are too full after eating dinner that we have no energy to write anything. Well…..I have decided to change this starting now.

Like mentioned above, since November 2010, Michelle, Jenna W, Bri, Clayton, Michelle and I (and occasionally Ethan) have been meeting once a month to catch up on what is happening in our lives, share a new restaurant dining experience, and maybe have a happy beverage of two :).

The name of our group is called CLUB 99: Food and Friends. Why Club 99 you ask? Well, when we all worked for VANOC, we all worked for Events Services (or EVS for those in the biz). Many know that recruiting volunteers to work the Vancouver 2010 Winter Games in Whistler was a challenge, and that there was not enough accommodation available to house volunteers up at the resort during those two weeks. So, one of the solutions was to have a select group of volunteers from the lower mainland meet at designated pick up points in the city, hop on a bus, and drive ALL THE WAY UP TO WHISTLER and back on a daily basis. Sounds easy? How about being on that bus for a 7:00am shift start time, up in the mountains where we actually did get snow, and work 8 hours + daily? Not so easy now is it 😀

We adored these volunteers as they were some of the best of the best, and always were willing to work more shifts than they were scheduled, regardless of how sleep deprived they were.

So, in honour of this great group, we named our restaurant group after them (see pic below of the special pin they received).

I am in the works of reviewing all the restaurants listed below, and getting ratings from the group on each of these places. This will be a work in progress that I am sure my friends will LOOOOOVE me for 😉

So without further ado, here is a list of the restaurants we have all dined at together. There was a bit of a break in the club when Bri and I moved to England for a year, but rest assured, the club is back in full force!

You will also note that there are a couple of times that we have decided to dine at a club members house in honour of special holidays.

Last Night in Londontown

20121017-232523.jpg

Tonight is officially my last night in London! Now I’m not saying that I will never come back here as I must admit, this city has captured my heart and I could come back, but I can honestly say I am looking forward to coming home right now.

This will be a short post as I will write a longer one tomorrow while at the airport, but I thought it seemed only fitting that I wrote a post tonight on my last night here, as I did on my first night when I started out on my adventure back in November 2011….

This year away has been amazing. Tough times for sure, but the experiences, the adventures, the people I got to meet, all have been priceless. One of the best people I met on this journey was my boss, and friend, Mick. This man not only taught me a lot, but was such a great friend. He has been there for me to help out through the good and the bad and I could not have done the job I was in without him. Sure he can be a MOG (miserable old git) but who isn’t these days 😉 He also cooked me this fabulous British roast dinner on my last night in town, and I got to spend it with him and his lovely family!!!

I couldn’t have asked for a better last night here 🙂 Mick if you ever find this blog post, please know that I appreciate all that you have done for me and cannot thank you enough! I will miss your MOG face and can’t wait till you visit Canada one day 🙂

I will expand on more of the things i got to do in another post tomorrow….sooooooo good night London! See both you and my next destination of Toronto (aka the centre of the universe) in the morning 🙂

Another great Quote :)

On the first day of term, a university professor stood in front of his philosophy class with an empty jar.

Without saying a word to his students, he removed the lid of the jar and filled it with golf balls. When no more golf balls fit he closed the jar with its lid. He then asked his class, “Would you say that the jar is now full?” His students observed the jar and concluded that the jar was indeed full.

The professor then proceeded to open the jar up and started inserting marbles into the jar. The marbles started to fill the gaps between the golf balls. After sealing the jar, he asked his class once again if they thought the jar was now full. The class concluded that the jar was indeed now full.

The professor opened the jar a third time and started pouring in sand. Obviously, the sand started filling the gaps between the golf balls and the marbles. He then sealed the jar and asked his class a third time if the jar was full. His class chuckled and replied in unison, “Yes, it is now full!”

The professor opened the jar and emptied two small cups of coffee in the jar. The liquid had completely filled the gap between the golf balls, the marbles, and the grains of sand. He then began his lecture.

“I hope you realise that life is very much like this jar. The golf balls represent the important things in life, like, family, loved ones, health, things that you care intimately about. If we lost everything else in life, our lives would still be ‘full’. The marbles are the other things in our lives that are important, but our happiness shouldn’t depend on them. Things like our work, our house, our car, etc. Finally, the sand represents everything else; the small stuff.

“If we were to have filled our jar up with sand first, there we wouldn’t have had enough room for the marbles or the golf balls. If we use all our life and energy on the small stuff, we won’t have any room for the important things.”

After a brief moment of silence one of the students asked, “Professor, what does the coffee represent?”

“Ah, I’m glad you asked,” replied the professor. “It means that no matter how full your life is, there is always room for a cup of coffee with a friend.”

A quote to think about…

A friend of mine today (Thanks Mike Pugh) sent me this quote today that the CEO of Coke wrote…

Had to share this as I think this is so very true for everyone:

Imagine life as a game in which you are juggling some five balls in the air. You name them – Work, Family, Health, Friends and Spirit and you’re keeping all of these in the air.

You will soon understand that work is a rubber ball. If you drop it, it will bounce back. But the other four balls – Family, Health, Friends and Spirit – are made of glass. If you drop one of these; they will be irrevocably scuffed, marked, nicked, damaged or even shattered. They will never be the same. You must understand that and strive for it.

Miss everyone back home 🙂
